Seismic Accelerometer Sensors
What Are Seismic Accelerometer Sensors?
The function of a seismic accelerometer is to measure the change in acceleration resulting from the forces that are working on an object, in our case rotating or reciprocating machines. It's designed to measure the casing vibration of a machine or other structures.
A charge is generated that is proportional to the acceleration resulting from the force that is exerted upon the machine or the structure. In rotating and reciprocating machines, the forces are internal, and we measure the casing motion with accelerometers.
Accelerometers can measure either dynamic or static acceleration. Dynamic acceleration is what we measure on a rotating or reciprocating machine that is vibrating. Static acceleration is more predictable and constant. Gravity is an example of a static acceleration.
The three different types of accelerometers are piezoelectric, piezoresistive and capacitive:
-
Piezoelectric accelerometer sensors are quite sensitive and most effective in measuring shock or vibration. Metrix uses these types of sensors because it provides an accurate and wide frequency response.
-
Piezoresistive accelerometer sensors are less sensitive and raise their resistance in response to the pressure they experience.
-
Capacitive sensors measure changes in electrical capacitance to measure the acceleration of an object.
SA6200A API 670 Accelerometer
This SIL Certified accelerator is a general-purpose sensor and can be used on a broad array of machinery. The broad-frequency response of 0.5 to 10 kHz (+/- 3dB), 50g range, and mounted resonance of 13 kHz make it ideal for most machinery applications.
SA6200UW Underwater Accelerometer
Designed for applications where IP68 protection against moisture ingression is required, such as condensing humidity or complete submersion.
SA6350 High Temp. Accelerometer
Designed for machinery applications with surface temperatures of up to 325 C.
SA6210 Low-Profile Accelerometer
Side-exit connection for limited space applications.
SA6250 High-Freq Accelerometer
Designed for applications where an extended upper frequency response limit (15kHz) is required.
